Cambridge company tried to build better french fry. Producing a crispy french fry without a deep fryer is one of the Holy Grails of food science. This month, a Cambridge research company, DuraFizz, invited me to taste their latest project, fresh from the oven.

Finally: it’s really a French fry without the deep fryer or the fat! The innovative food scientists at Oh So Crisp have created an all-natural coating that crisps food perfectly in an oven. Using a unique blend of ingredients, they have created a coating that works with a food’s natural moisture levels to achieve a crispy outer texture when baked.

Currently, their products include frozen, pre-coated Russet Fries and Sweet Potato Fries. The zero-fat fries are then available to restaurants, schools, and consumers directly. The coating also works to crisp poultry, fish, and vegetables. Oh So Crisp is also working on creating other products to bring to market in the future. Stay tuned – this is one tasty treat to watch!

ooNae has selected North by East for its ecommerce web development and custom front end web design. Thanks to Mica and Chris at ooNae for recognizing our talents and taking the time to meet with us.

We are excited to work with ooNae and help them get the word out about their Picnic Pouch line of designer/environmentally friendly re-usable sandwich baggies. Picnic Pouch, the story . . .

One day, while helping out with lunch at school, I noticed that the trash bin

was nearly full after one seating. I saw my own children skipping toward the barrel and happily tossing their empty plastic baggies in. After inquiring with

the teachers, I was amazed to hear how much trash our little school

produced each day.

The creation of the Picnic Pouch is the result of that realization.

This design has been tried and tested on countless lunches. The materials selected will keep your sandwich soft and your crackers crunchy for the

Tuesday, Richardson, 47, hosted a party for a few dozen Haverhill teenagers at Shoe City Boxing Club on Merrimack Street to watch the debut of an anti-violence rap music video absent profanity or references to sex or drugs.

"I wanted to prove to kids that I could make a good rap video without violence," said Richardson, who has committed his life to being a mentor to teenagers in the aftermath of his brother's death. "My goal is simply to save kids."

We have been doing some great work for our existing clients, and have added new companies to our client list over the past few months. Our success comes from the quality of work we have done for small businesses in various industries throughout the country who have reached out to us for web and print based marketing consulting.

By now you all realize we are big fans of TED talks, and this TED talk I am blogging about, I think, pertains directly to the business we are in. Marketing and Advertising are thought to manipulate or influence consumer spending. As marketers we try to understand consumers, watch buying trends, and appeal to the fickle behavior of the consumer.

What is it that compels people to spend the hard earned money they laboriously earn by often doing things they never intended or wanted to do? It must be the desire that people have to brand themselves similar to the way a business brands itself. Purchasing certain items that match the image that becomes the person.

Sheena Iyengar elegantly discusses the role of choice in society, and how choice is perceived by different cultures. Choice is clearly much larger than people going shopping; but understanding how people choose, why they choose, and the motivators behind their choices can improve the art of marketing and advertising to be even more custom, focused and appealing. Choice cannot be controlled but with extensive research, creative sampling, diligent implementation and perfect design, choice can be influenced.

Admongo.gov - The Education of the Masses

"Advertising is all around you," Admongo urges youngsters to always ask three questions: "Who is responsible for the ad? What is the ad actually saying? What does the ad want me to do?"

Is this really necessary?

The introduction to the admongo.gov game is agonizing at best, and then the game itself is kind of weird. The gaming style isn't so bad; plays like Super Mario Brothers where you can gather coins, but you need to stop at each advertisement and answer "What do you think this ad is trying to get you to do?"

Regardless, Admongo will probably not be a big success in gaming systems anytime soon.

One of my favorite publications is FOUND Magazine, a unique and creative display from start to finish. FOUND offers a birds eye view of human interaction. Even though you don't know the people or the context of the notes, its still captivating because it leaves so much to your imagination.

Turning the Page

Some of you have been asking about the progress of several projects we have been working on. Let me begin by saying that over the past few months we have come so far and learned so much while working in tandem with our clients.

1.)We recently went live with the Bell Air Moving site, a project that is near and dear to our hearts. Yes, it looks straight forward at first glance; but combining the right message through content, and keeping the mom & pop look and feel while incorporating the latest in SEO and website functionality is a skill.

Bell Air was a fun project, and it provided us with an opportunity to learn the moving & storage business through our competitor analysis and by working closely with the Bell Air team. We are looking forward to maintaining our relationship through consistent website updates, along with a variety of other graphic works.

2.) KellyBuilt is another project that has been and continues to be inspiring. The success of this project came from the close relationship we had with the people at KellyBuilt, and the simple fact that we share similar views on sustainability planning and delivering the highest quality work possible. KellyBuilt separates itself from the other guys by being one of the first to offer inlaid shingles and custom concrete design in the New England area. Both of these services could be considered an art more so than a construction project. Needless to say, we at North by East are impressed by the concept, and look forward to seeing this esthetically pleasing work on all forms of architecture.

Bell Air Movers moving with North by East

The Kellybuilt Company - Serving the South Shore for over 18 years

We recently began working with Kellybuilt Contracting, a highly skilled, honest and reliable firm that does an extensive amount of contract work from new home building to installing screen doors.

After meeting with owner Brian Kelly we realized we saw eye to eye on a lot of things (deep sea fishing most importantly). Brian explained to us that he was always trying to incorporate striking features at all levels of his work, and enjoyed manipulating a variety of building materials to offer more to the architectural integrity and appearance of his clients existing and planned homes, offices and miscellaneous buildings. We simply sat back and nodded our heads in agreement, and were hooked on the idea of working with the guys at Kellybuilt who shared our enthusiasm for aesthetics and attention to detail.

While continuing this casual meeting, we explained to Brian that the way he felt about building was the same way we felt about business development and branding. That if given the opportunity to leave a mark or impression on something; why not make it your best work, providing the most visible mark or lasting impression. We were excited about the idea of showing Kellybuilt to the world, and quickly came to terms with Brian over a hand shake and a hope of fishing come warmer weather, (and a contract for all you Sharks out there looking to snap our lines).

We will be providing the NEW Kellybuilt website (going live late February), and so much more.

SUCCESS communications contacted NxE in late December 2009 looking for an affordable website development option. SUCCESS had built their business based on word of mouth advertising that was enhanced by the positive results they delivered to their clients. As the New Year approaches most of us are granted the hypothetical fresh start. January 1st is the chance we have to review the events of 2009 and see where we went wrong, or where we went right. We will dwell on our failures, wince over missed opportunities, sigh and shake our heads about having one too many Shirley Temples at the company Christmas party. Competitive nature influences us to focus on these trivial mishaps; but if we can focus on our successes and accomplishments it will make planning for 2010 all the more inspiring.

Sneaky Hybrids

Best Ideas of 2009

It has happened to me more times than I can count. Crossing a street while running. Walking in a parking garage. Carrying a load of groceries to the car. Each time there was a sneaky hybrid lurking behind me, completely silent. It is one of the only dangers of going green. Accidents between pedestrians or bikers and hybrids in electric mode are 2 times higher than regular cars.

The interesting part of the scenario is how to solve the problem. Should the hybrids blast a "car sound" when in electric mode? Will there be a "babbling brook" or "ocean waves" sound machine type option? Can you download the "Ice Cream Truck" collection of cartones? It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

When is a good idea and a good prototype enough?

After reading an article like "The End of CrunchPad" by Tech Crunch founder Michael Arrington, you can't help but shake your head. But what does that head shaking mean? What part of watching a good idea, good product, or good anything go bust makes you shake your head or feel what you feel? For me, in the context of this article, it's the lack of understanding and reason shown by some of the characters in this story. Business is business, revolving around clarity of terms and contracts; but is it unheard of to be reasonable in decision making, and give each member of a project the benefit of the doubt, especially when it is obvious that they played a major roll.

How many situations have there been like this? How much more would be available to people if these situations didn't occur? I don't know, but probably a lot. In classic fashion though, some people just seem to want it all, rather than just settling for a piece of it. It could be possible to build an impressive personal portfolio with several pieces of a project that a person contributes to, rather than one whole project that is tainted.
